Fighters on Twitter

Posted On 11/03/2009 10:36:00 AM by P.J. Harrison |

If you are on Twitter (Follow Me) there’s a huge MMA community. It’s unbelievable, the amount of support fighters, promoters, brands, commentators, writers and fans get. Twitter is a great tool for all those listed above, to reach out to one another. Some fighters go to certain lengths to show their love of their fans. Its great! There’s been many times when a fighter makes one little comment and the whole internet/twitter world is abuzz with who said what. Everyday, there seems to be more and more of a growth in this mma on-line community. Its a great tool for fans and fighters alike to voice their opinions on other fighters, fights, fight wear, brands, contests/giveaways and so forth.

I’ve seen many fans post their thoughts on fights. There were even times where *gasp* I would miss a particular fight and, while I’m recording via DVR, I can get a play by play of the fights taking place. Sure, they can be spoilers for those who’d rather see it on tv. But, personally, I’d like to be kept abreast of every punch or kick thrown. Who was the upset. I don’t like to be out of the loop in the mma world. As someone told me recently, “…a week is a long time in the mma world…” This is quite true. Just this weekend, “news” broke that the fighter known as “War Machine” is turning to porn. Yes, it was news. A lot of the twitter world was talking about the news first thing Saturday morning.

I like to follow a lot of the fighters. Its a way to keep updated on who is currently training for a fight, who is working out a contract, who’s replacing whom (as there are a lot of injuries going around). Its even exciting when it get closer to a fight/event. If you’re lucky, they’ll (meaning the fighters) let you know where they’ll be in case fans want a photo op or an autograph or even fight gear to give away.

In some cases however, twitter can also be either a blessing or a curse in disguise. When news broke that Brock Lesnar was pulling out of UFC 106 against Shane Carwin, Shane said himself that he found out the fight wasn’t taking place even before any of his team let him know. Sure he was disappointed, along with many fans, but it also let him know how many of the mma fans were still around to support him and voice their opinions on who he should instead fight or how they explicitly felt about Brock Lesnar. Thankfully, they will still be able to get their fight. Carwin versus Lesnar has simply been postponed until January 2, 2010. Otherwise known as UFC 108, which is turning out to be another great fight card. I know I can’t wait for that one either.

In closing, following is a list of some fighters, promoters, writers, brands that you should be following. If you aren’t already. If you’re not on twitter, get on it. Like right now. Seriously, you’re missing a lot of good stuff.
